Injustice Mobile

Our Goal: Injustice mobile was an existing mobile game that we continued to support. Many of the additions I encouraged the team to make were purely usability related, however there were several feature additions that I pushed for from a UX perspective. Having the benefit of a rich player base and research/analytics, we added on to Injustice mobile to continue to meet user needs and changing expectations.

My Role: My largest responsibility with Injustice mobile was to not only prove the value that UX design can bring to player satisfaction, but also how they can improve our KPIs. There were many opportunities to improve the existing game based on data we had previously collected (previous user testing/analytics) so I encouraged the team to use this feedback to create various design changes, features, and more.

Injustice Store Sorting

I asked the development team to implement various analytics hook-ins that would track player behavior. One set of data that I requested was to track player sorting in the Injustice mobile store. Through tracking and examining these behaviors, I implemented a new, more personalized sort order that incorporated most used sort orders, and saved defaults to the player's profile.

Energy Refresh Videos

On many occasions, business goals must be balanced with UX goals. One such occasion was when our publishers asked us to discover a way to encourage users to view sponsored videos. My goal was to figure out a way to make this not only valuable to the player, but to make this feature as unobtrusive as possible. Working with production and game design, I decided that we would grant users in-game energy to continue playing, in exchange for ad views. This solution was received well and benefitted both the user and business goals.

STAR Labs Feature

As with all mobile games, new content is key for player retention. One feature addition that our team created was STAR Labs, allowing new ways for players to upgrade their characters. I was responsible for designing the feature, using research and testing to utilize the best possibly design patterns for the user to accomplish their goals.

Survivor Mode Feature

Another large feature addition that the team and I created was the Survivor Mode addition. This again added to the amount of content players could play through. I was responsible for prototyping the feature. Using data we had collected previously, I was able to ensure that the rewards were valuable to the player, and would help in player retention.

Gear Set Addition

One feature that was commonly requested by players was the addition of gear sets (as commonly found in many RPG games). Using this information the team and I made efforts to add in this feature. Gear sets can contain sometimes complex information and through testing I was able to come to a solution that provided the information the player needed in a clear way.

Dealership Profile Inventory

Our Goal: To create a more efficient way for users to find contextually relevant information pertaining to dealerships. In this instance, we wanted to create an easier way for users to locate inventory listings through a dealership's profile.

My Role: As the primary interaction designer on this project, it was my job to ensure that whatever solution we developed solved the problem we set out to solve. This would be accomplished through keeping a close eye on page analytics, A/B testing, and user testing.

Initially, I hosted a participatory design session with several other UX designers and visual designers to brainstorm on concepts for how to best solve our design problem.

Once we had a concept that we felt comfortable with, we tested it with users to see any potential pain points.

The findings were paramount in helping us iterate on the screen to make sure that users' needs were met.

Following several rounds of iteration we released our solution to the wild. Analytic data backed up that it indeed solved our design problem, allowing users to more efficiently navigate useful content.

Dealership Guided Navigation

Our Goal: To create a more efficient way for users to navigate our dealer locator features. Surveys that we previously administered had shown evidence that my team's portion of the site could use an update along these lines.

My Role: I was tasked with approaching this problem in a very exploratory way. We knew there was a problem, but we didn't want any preconceived notions or biases to influence how we solved for it. Ultimately we let the users speak for themselves (through surveys and usability testing) and arrived at a solution that worked.

I began this project by hosting a participatory design session. Several designers and I discussed blue sky ideas on how to help our users navigate our site easier.

It was important to keep the big picture in mind at all times. Getting too embedded in any solution at the conceptual level would have severely limited our ability to create a great design.

I wireframed a solution containing modern design practices that would potentially solve for the problems we discovered through our surveys. After several rounds of usability testing and A/B testing, we developed this solution.

eBay Seller Center

Our Goal: To reinvent the eBay Seller Center using the existing architecture as a guideline. Our ultimate goal was to convert the system to a CMS that was designed using the principles of responsive design.

My Role: I acted as the primary UX designer on this project. One of the more unique challenges for this project was the fact that the entire team I worked with was located in San Francisco while I remained in the Chicago office. It was my responsibility to fully understand the existing information architecture of the site, and provide a direction for us to move forward using wireframes. This project also required very open lines of communication between myself, the visual designer, and the content strategist.

I started out by defining the site templates. These would accommodate any page in the Seller Center.

It was important to understand the current architecture of the Seller Center to truly see what direction we needed to move with it.

Working apart from the rest of the team presented interesting challenges. I annotated all of my wireframes to ensure that there was as little confusion as possible.

It was important to have mobile versions of the wires as well. The entire experience was designed with responsive design principles.

Some pages needed a bit more work than others. Special pages that did not follow the rules of the templates would be further defined through my wires.

Working remotely from the team presented some strong challenges, however through routine contact and a very rapid/iterative work process, we were able to design this CMS.

Ehdrigohr: The Role-Playing Game

Ehdrigohr is a table top RPG created by the incredibly talented Allen Turner. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to team up with him and prototype an iPad mini-game. The game was designed to expose players to concepts found in the world of Ehdrigohr in a fun and interactive way. Following a lengthy requirements gathering phase with Allen I used a combination of Omnigraffle and Axure to create a prototype of the game that showcased some of the content found in the world of Ehdrigohr.

Advised through biweekly stakeholder check-ins, I was encouraged to translate and incorporate game mechanics commonly found in board games into the iPad game. The resulting product would allow interested users to experience the world of Ehdrigohr in an engaging, digital way.

Provider Finder

Humana's provider finder allows users to locate medical providers through their directory of doctors, dentists, and other medical practitioners. I was tasked with redesigning the experience using Humana's new brand strategy.

Humana Healthy Food

Healthy Food is a Humana program designed to encourage Humana members to live a healthier lifestyle through their dietary choices. For this project, I was tasked with wiring out an easily navigable front to back experience which Humana members could efficiently traverse in order to reap the benefits of the program.

My team began by creating the necessary user flows defining the course of action a user could take in this brand new experience. It was important to maintain a connection with the key stakeholders involved in this project, so I routinely assembled them for activities such as participatory design sessions.

Several concepts were created. Through team review and usability testing we chose a prototype that allowed users to efficiently use the system and best met the expectations of the stakeholders.
